Calleva House
Planning and Listed Building Approval received December 2022
Extent: Refurbishment and return of the Grade II Listed Building to a family home
Calleva House is a fine example of an early 18th century, pre-Palladian, baroque town house. Used as a school throughout the nineteenth century it became an antiques centre in the twentieth. Its handsome street facade is divided by the use of full height, brick pilasters which rise up from the first floor piano nobile to the continuous brick entablature. The large format, 12 over 12 pane sash windows have exposed sash boxes and typical early 18 century glazing profiles. A considerable amount of original crown glass still survives. The building is rare in that it has never had its architectural detail significantly compromised. Often the heavy, early 18th century glazing is replaced later in the 19th century with finer Georgian glazing bars or even large pane, clear Victorian plate glass. The majority of the internal rooms have not been unduly adapted or split up so that nearly all the original internal panelling, fireplaces and other features remain.
Our commission is to convert the building back into a single, family house. This involves the demolition of later structures to the rear and the conversion of the coach house to the side. Work is programmed to start in early 2024.
